Picture it: NYC, the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of college. I stumbled upon tickets to Letterman, so, you know: I went. I didn’t have any real plans other than to wander around anyway. It was an adventure-having kind of day. . . Plus I’d made the massive mistake of wearing a dress with no leggings or thigh protection of any kind, so the chub rub was real and it was awful. Sitting in a cool studio sounded pretty damn good at that point.
I don’t remember if I knew ahead of time who all would be there, but regardless, I’d never heard of the musical guest. When it came time for that segment, a tall, slender guy with jet black hair and an outstandingly suited presence strolled out onstage and just absolutely crushed it. It was an amazing performance by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, promoting their album Nocturama with the song “Bring it On”.
What a way to experience a legend for the first time.
